A WORLDWIDE STUDY
Modern day science has given us one more tool to help solve the riddles of yesterday. With a simple DNA test you may be able to help solve a family mystery -- the answers are out there, but we need your participation.

This ongoing DNA project was created to assist in researching the different 'Burdett' origins and ancestry. We encourage male individuals with the surname of Burdett or any variation (soundex versions) of this surname to participate in this project. A simple DNA test through the FamilyTreeDNA testing service will assist us in this exciting project.
We currently have descendants of John Burdett of Prince William County, VA, b abt 1710; descendants of Frederick Burdett of SC b 15 Oct 1753; William R. Burditt of SC b abt 1755, an additional family from SC, Robert Burditt (c1633-1667)of Malden, MA; Robert Burdick (c1632-1692) of Newport,Rhode Island, as well as 'Burdett/Burdick' families still living in England, Germany and Australia.
We encourage individuals from all geographic regions to join in this group. The minimum test required is the Y-DNA12, a $149 test, however by joining our surname group you'll recieve the 12 marker test at the group rate of $99. There are more detailed tests, but the Y-DNA12 is a great starting point (you can always upgrade later without retaking the test...).

Please join us in this exciting search of our "lost cousins". If you have any questions feel free to e-mail us. Please forward this link to other Burditt/Burdett/Burdette/Burdick cousins that might be interested in particpating in this DNA project.
The degree of success of the project is enhanced by a group made up of a variety of ancestors and their descendants. How to join the Burdett DNA Project

GOALS:

  • Identify others who are related
  • Prove or disprove theories regarding ancestors
  • Perhaps, solve brick walls in our research
  • Determine a new area for further research
  • Validate existing research
  • Energize more people to do additional research
  • Establish the different 'Burdett' origins
Please contribute funds to the Burditt DNA project using the the following link: General Fund. This money will go to those wishing to participate in the Burdett DNA project but may need finanicial assistance. If the Burdett DNA project interests you but you are not a male descendant, this is a great way you can help. (Please reference any donations to "Burditt - M10701")

CLASSROOM:

A brief description of how the DNA program works:
A female has two X chromosomes, while a male has one X chromosome and one Y chromosome. If the male passes an X chromosome at conception, the child will be a girl, whereas, if the male passes a Y chromosome at conception, the child will be a boy. This is where DNA testing comes in to determine relationships. The Y-Chromosome is ALWAYS passed from father to son. A mutation can occur in about every 500 generations. Therefore, a great, great grandfather's Y-Chromosome should be identical to that of his great, great grandson.

The test is about as simple as brushing your teeth. You "brush" the inside of your cheek to obtain the sample. Once you join, the company will send to you a kit with three "brushes" to collect three samples. You mail the samples back to them in the package included with the kit. Only male 'Burdett's' can use the kit.

How are cousins calculated (i.e. 3rd cousin, twice removed). Use this printable chart to help understand the relationships: Genealogical Relationship Chart. First Cousins have a common grandparent. 2nd Cousins have a common great-grandparent. The removed part is how many generations removed the person is from being in the same generation (Once removed is one generation from being in the same generation (i.e. 2nd cousin, once removed means one the persons is one generation further from the other from being 2nd cousins(or sharing the same great-grandparent - however they both have a common ancestor, one is 3 generations back and the other is 4 generation back). 7th cousins, 3 times removed, means one of the persons is 3 generations further from the other from being exactly 7th cousins(or sharing the same 6-greats grandparent).

RESULTS:

    57 - MEMBERS ENROLLED
    08 - UNIQUE 'Burdett' GROUPS
    11 - RESULTS NOT GROUPED
    08 - PENDING RESULTS

Analysis of results: Using the Burdett DNA Project Chart some exciting new information can be concluded that once was only assumed (or not even considered).

SUMMARY(8/24/2008): A new group has been added to the Burdett DNA Project - Group 8. Currently little is known of this group, we hope to learn more from the participants of this group about this group. Also in the news is an addition to Group 1, there are now two participants of Group 1 that are NOT descendants of the orginal John Burdette, of Viriginia. These two participants trace their Burdett lines to England but immigrant to the US in the 1800's - almost 200 years after John Burdett. With this info it become clear that the Virgina Burdett's may be descedants from the orginial Burdett's of England.. Still need some documented lineage back prior to John Burdett into England to make a better connections - but the DNA evidence shows there is a connections there.
